Apple reportedly working on low-cost 9.7-inch iPad model for 2018
Back in March this year, Apple launched a new 9.7-inch iPad starting at $329. Now it appears that Apple is working on a more affordable 9.7-inch tablet, which will launch sometime next year.
According to a new report by Digitimes, Apple is planning to launch an inexpensive 9.7-inch iPad in 2018 to compete with the likes of Samsung, Amazon, Lenovo, Huawei, Asus and others.
The report citing sources of upstream suppliers, claims that the next year's 9.7-inch iPad will have a starting price of around $259 (Rs. 17,000), making it Apple's most affordable tablet offering till date. The new iPad is said to be aimed at attracting more consumers, and will also allow Apple to maintain its present 10 million-unit tablet shipments a quarter.
The tablet market's condition is worsening every quarter with Apple seeing weakening sale of its iPad series. Android tablet shipments have also been dropping rapidly with most tier-two and tier-three brands stepping out of the market. Apple with its low cost tablet is aiming to help revive the tablet market.
Apple's low-cost iPad will reportedly be manufactured by Compal Electronics, and the tablets's PCB will be given to Compeq and Unitech Printer Board. The new 9.7-inch iPad model is expected to release in Q2, 2018 and in addition to regular consumer, it will be targeted at industrial and service sectors.
Do note that, there is no way to confirm the authenticity of the report so take it with a pinch of salt.
