Google's Tez payment app has 12 million users in India; will soon get bill payments feature

Back in September this year, Google forayed into India's digital mobile payment segment with the launch of UPI powered Tez app, which enabled users to make payments directly from their bank accounts. Today, Google at its Google for India event revealed some key stats and features coming to the app.

Google says Tez has seen huge growth in the country in its first 10 weeks of launch, with over 140 million transactions processed from nearly 12 million active users. The platform is said to have over 525,00 merchants who pay their suppliers or transfer money to employees.  

"And Tez isn’t just being used in India’s top metros—in fact, we’ve seen Tez users from Kashmir to Kanyakumari, from towns in Arunachal Pradesh to the villages of Gujarat." Google said in a blog post.

Speaking about the new features, Tez will soon allow you pay utility bills right within the app directly from your bank account. The app will support more than 70 billers including utilities and DTH service providers covering all states and major metros in India for bill payments. Some of service providers include Tata Power, ACT Fibernet, Reliance Energy, MTNL and Dish TV among others.

Once you pay a bill on the Tez Platform, you don't have to add the billing organization again. The app will also remind you when certain bills are due, and also help avoid paying the same bill twice, as the payment status will be automatically updated.

Tez will also get a new feature called Spark, which is a fun animated moment, that trigger when a certain word or phrase appears in the message with the payment, such as "hello" or "India".

Google says the new features will roll out to Tez in the coming weeks.
