Xiaomi Keeps It's Word, Starts Rolling Out Oreo To Mi A1 "Before The End Of 2017"
It ain't over till it is over. When Xiaomi started recruiting testers for the Oreo update two weeks ago, it seemed unlikely that Xiaomi will live up to its promise of updating the Mi A1 to Oreo before the end of the year. In fact, the first Oreo beta for the device was rolled out only four days ago. Now after one beta build and four days of its testing, Xiaomi has announced that it has begun rolling out the stable Oreo update to all the Mi A1 users.
We're ending the year with an O! #MiA1 users, stay tuned as we're rolling out your long-awaited update in batches but make sure you're already on the latest December update (7.12.19) to receive Android O! pic.twitter.com/GhRtDnyJn4

To get the Oreo update, your Mi A1 must be on the December security patch. I would recommend you to go to Settings > About phone > System updates and tap on 'Check for updates'. If you have any pending update, install it from therein. In case you are already running the December security patch, you would have to wait for the Oreo update notification to reach your device. By rolling out an update "in batches", Xiaomi means that the Oreo update will be delivered to a specific number of users (batch size = number of users) today. These users will be randomly picked by a computer. The batch size will be increased each following day until the update has been made available to everyone.
One of my friends with the Mi A1 didn't get the update notification but when he tried to check for the update manually, the Oreo update popped up. Initially I was thinking that this was just the December security patch (check the update screenshot) but it turned out to be the Oreo update. So don't be mistaken by the wording in the update that shows up. If you get a 1107.4MB update, it is Oreo. For some users on Reddit though - who got the update notification (refer to the screenshot below) - the notification mentioned " Dec 2017 with Android O".
The Mi A1 Oreo update reminds me of the Nougat update for the OnePlus 3 and 3T. OnePlus promised to update the two devices to Nougat before the end of 2016 and it was just hours before the New Year that OnePlus announced that it had begun rolling out the Nougat update. So even though Xiaomi barely fulfilled its promise, it did keep it after all!
