ZTE Axon 7 Will Get Android Oreo By April 2018, Company Shares Oreo Kernel Source Code With LineageOS Maintainer

ZTE Germany has confirmed in a forum post that the Axon 7 will be getting the Oreo update by April 2018. The forum post made by ZTE Germany is as follows:

There is really good news for all users of the ZTE Axon 7: Android 8 Oreo comes to your devices and provides you with all the news that the new Android software has to offer!

Our plan is to distribute the new software update to your devices in April 2018. With this update, our new Stock+ UI for Axon 7 will be released for the first time.

What if that's not good news for Christmas? We wish you a nice Christmas and we will get back to work immediately to have Android 8 Oreo ready for you soon.

For Oreo on the Axon 7, ZTE will be dropping its custom skin of MiFavor and will be moving over to stock Android. It still remains to be seen how close Stock+ UI will be to the vanilla version of Android.

While we are several months away from seeing Oreo on the Axon 7, ZTE has ensured that the custom ROM development for Oreo on the Axon 7 gets a head-start. The Chinese company has apparently reached out to the LineageOS maintainer of the Axon 7 and shared the Oreo based kernel source code with him. According to the LineageOS maintainer Unjustified Dev, he "was sent the build and kernel source early to adapt to Lineage for 8.0".

Kernel source codes help developers in building stable custom ROMs for a device. Since Unjustified Dev now has access to the kernel source code, he can work on getting LineageOS close to the official Oreo update in terms of stability. Unjustified Dev has stated that he won't be sharing the kernel source code with anyone until he gets the nod from ZTE to do so. The developer went on to say that "this could even take until they release their official build."

Keep in mind I didn’t sign anything. I’m just a random guy they trust and I’d like to keep it that way. All I can say is just hold off until things are settled. Everyone made it through the wait for N I’m sure everyone can make it again for O.
