Motorola Releases Oreo Based Kernel Source Code For Moto X4
Motorola updated the Android One variant of the Moto X4 to Oreo 8.0 last month, and soon followed that with Android 8.0 for the standard variant. As per the terms of General Public License (GPL), OEMs have to release the kernel source code of the devices they ship with Android. Motorola is one of the few companies who have abided by the GPL and shared kernel source codes of its devices on a timely basis. The Moto X4 Android One was launched with Nougat in the United States in September and Motorola released the Nougat based kernel source code a month later. Motorola has now released the Oreo kernel source code for the X4.
Kernel source codes are important for developers as they help them in building stable custom ROMs, kernels and recoveries. At the time of writing this article, there was little development for the Moto X4 on the XDA forums. There was an unofficial yet functional build of TWRP available. Since the bootloader of the Moto X4 can be unlocked easily and there is a build of TWRP available, the development for the device should pick up now that the Oreo kernel source code has been released.
The kernel source code can be found at the link in the source. This kernel source code is applicable for both the standard as well as the Android One version of the X4.
