Report: Nokia 6 (2018) Getting Oreo Update On First Boot, Comes With Google Services In China
The second generation Nokia 6 was officially unveiled just three days ago with Nougat 7.1.1 onboard. At the time of the phone's launch, HMD promised to update the phone soon to Oreo. Now according to a report by NokiaPowerUser, the Nokia 6 (2018) is getting the Oreo update right after its first boot.
While the Nokia 6 (2018) owners will appreciate HMD for delivering the Oreo update quickly, I'm wondering why HMD didn't ship the phone with Oreo. One of the possible explanations for this can be to avoid support for Project Treble. Google's CTS suite requires all the devices shipping with Oreo to support Treble. OEMs have to oblige to the terms of the CTS so that they can include Google's apps like the Play Store, Play Services on their devices. OEMs are reluctant to support Treble because that would require them to allocate a part of their R&D for development towards adopting Treble. Additionally, support for Treble will make users expect updates for longer periods of time, something which OEMs may be reluctant to offer.
The report also states that the Nokia 6 comes with optional support for Google services in China. NokiaPowerUser say that they were given this knowledge "by sources". Given that Google services are blocked in China, I would recommend you to take the inclusion of Google services with a grain of salt.
