Sony Is Rolling Out January Security Patches To A Bunch Of Xperia Devices
Just a few days back. Sony started rolling out the January security patches to the Xperia XA1 and XA1 Plus, and now Sony is doing the same for the Xperia XA1 Ultra, XZ, XZs and X Performance.
The incremental update comes with the build number 41.3.A.2.24 for the Xperia XZ, XZs and X Performance, while the build number for XA1 Ultra's update is 42.0.A.4.167. The former set of devices are getting the January 1 security patch, and the XA1 Ultra is being updated with the January 5 security patch.
After CPU vulnerabilities of Spectre and Meltdown were disclosed earlier this month, Sony Mobile released a statement addressing the issue. The statement is given below.
Sony Mobile treats the security and privacy of customer data with the utmost seriousness. We are aware of “Spectre” and “Meltdown” and would like to reassure our users that protective patches have been provided as part of our ongoing Security Update Programme – patched devices will have Android Security Patch dated 2018-01-05 or later.
In addition to keeping device software up to date, users can also take extra steps to protect themselves by only downloading trusted applications from reputable stores and by keeping all apps updated to the latest versions.
As per Sony's statement, it is clear that the Xperia XA1 Ultra is secure of Spectre and Meltdown, while the trio of Xperia XZ, XZs and X Performance is still vulnerable. It's possible that Sony might update the three vulnerable devices to the January 5 security patch later this month, or these devices will be eventually secured with the February security patches, which will be released next month.
