Samsung Posts Oreo Kernel Source Code Of Galaxy S8/S8+ (Exynos Variants)
When Samsung released the Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus last year, the company took nearly a month to share the kernel source code. There are companies like OnePlus who release the kernel source codes alongside the device launch (or update roll out) and there are others like Xiaomi who take several months. Samsung has taken a leaf out of OnePlus' book and has released the Oreo based kernel sources for its yesteryear flagship devices. Kernel source codes are required by developers for building custom ROMs, recoveries and kernels. For the time being, Samsung has released only the sources for the Exynos variants of the Galaxy S8 and S8+. The Oreo update started rolling out to both the Exynos and Snapdragon variants yesterday. At the time of writing this article, there wasn't much development for the Galaxy S8 and S8+ on the XDA forums. The Exynos variants of the GS8 can be easily unlocked by enabling OEM unlock under 'Developer options'. The Snapdragon models of the GS8 are locked down and Samsung is yet to provide an official bootloader unlock method for these devices. In countries like China however, the Snapdragon models ship with an unlocked bootloader. There is a build of LineageOS 14.1 available for the Exynos variant of the GS8, but it comprises of major bugs (like calls, audio not working). Official TWRP builds are available for both the Exynos and Snapdragon variants, but there aren't any custom ROMs.
