Xiaomi Releases Kernel Source Code For Redmi Note 5 & Redmi Note 5 Pro
Xiaomi has drawn a lot of flak for not releasing the kernel sources of its devices on a timely basis, but now the Chinese company seems to be improving. The Redmi Note 5 and Redmi Note 5 Pro were launched in India on Valentine's Day, and now after nearly two months, Xiaomi has released the kernel source code for the two smartphones.
The Redmi Note 5 is a rebranded Redmi 5 Plus which was initially launched in China last year. After Xiaomi launched the Redmi Note 5 Pro in India, it introduced the handset as Redmi Note 5 in China. The Redmi Note 5 for China was launched with Oreo 8.1, while the Indian variant was instead launched with Nougat 7.1.1. Xiaomi has released the Nougat kernel source code for the Redmi Note 5 and Redmi Note 5 Pro.
Kernel source codes are used by developers for building stable custom ROMs, recoveries and custom kernels. At the time of writing this article, both Nougat and Oreo based custom ROMs were available on the XDA forums for the Redmi Note 5 and Redmi Note 5 Pro. Like in the case of the Redmi 4A, the ROMs use the prebuilt kernel because the kernel sources weren't available till now. Now that the kernel source code has been released, you can expect the custom ROMs for the two handsets to get stabler and the development pick up pace. You can view the kernel source by visiting the link in the source.
