Nokia 7 Plus Easily Passes JerryRigEverything's Durability Tests, But Raises Questions Over The 'Ceramic Feel' Paint
The Nokia 7 Plus is HMD Global's latest upper mid-range smartphone. The handset was launched at MWC and recently made its way to India. Zack Nilson, who tests the structural integrity of smartphones on his channel JerryRigEverything, recently put the Nokia 7 Plus to the test.
The Nokia 7 Plus' 6-inch IPS LCD screen is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3, and hence during the scratch test, there were faint marks at level six, with deeper grooves at level seven. In the burn test, the pixels of the Nokia 7 Plus turned black after ten seconds of exposure to flame; however, the pixels did recover to their original form.
The scratch test revealed that the sides and buttons of the Nokia 7 Plus are made of metal. HMD claims that the back of the Nokia 7 Plus is made of aluminium and is coated with six layers of 'ceramic-feel' paint. Nilson says that since ceramic is a much harder material than paint, it isn't possible to create the 'feel' of a harder material in a softer material. Although it isn't certain which material HMD has used to paint the Nokia 7 Plus, the back of the phone was confirmed to have aluminium underneath.
The rear-facing dual camera setup is covered by glass and the dual-tone flash beside it is covered with plastic. The fingerprint scanner worked even after it was scratched heavily. In the bend test, the Nokia 7 Plus didn't flex at all. The Nokia 7 Plus does pass JerryRigEverything's tests, but it also raises some questions over HMD's claims of the build material.
