OnePlus has posted a 'Software Maintenance Schedule', which, as the name suggests, states for how long OnePlus phones will be supported via updates. OnePlus is promising two years of software updates and three years of security patches.
OnePlus' definition of software updates includes "new features, Android version upgrades and Android security patch updates bi-monthly". Once the two year software support period is over, there will be another year of security updates which will be released once in every two months.
The software maintenance schedule is already in effect for all the existing OnePlus smartphones. The OP3 turned two on June 14, and the OP3T will be two years old in November. OnePlus unified the updates for the 3 and 3T shortly after the latter was launched. OnePlus has said that the release date of T variants would be considered for calculating the two year mark. This effectively means that the 3 and 3T will get software updates until November 2018, and security patches till November 2019.
For OnePlus 5 and 5T, the dates have to be extended by one year, and for the OnePlus 6, another year from there.
In addition to the maintenance schedule, OnePlus also mentioned that the final Open Beta for the 3 and 3T will be released later this week. OnePlus promised to update the 3 and 3T to Android 8.1, and since Oreo 8.1 is yet to be released for the two smartphones, the upcoming beta should be based on that. For OxygenOS beta users, OnePlus will be releasing a build in the beginning of July to help them get back to the stable builds.
