Confirmed: OnePlus 6T Won't Feature Wireless Charging & IP Rating

The OnePlus 6T is just two weeks away. OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei had confirmed in an interview that the 6T won't have a headphone jack, but an in-display fingerprint scanner. Now in another interview, Pei's superior OnePlus CEO Pete Lau has confirmed that the 6T won't sport an IP rating and it won't support wireless charging.

Speaking to CNET, Lau said that OnePlus fans have grown accustomed to the fast speeds of Dash Charge, so a user would want wireless charging in a OnePlus phone to be as quick as OnePlus' wired charging. However, the current wireless technology is capable of charging phones quickly at the expense of heat. Lau doesn't want that to be the case. The OnePlus CEO said, "We're working hard on this (adding wireless charging). When we get to the day that the wireless charging can get up to speed without the implication of heat that we expect, then I believe we can integrate the technology."

For the lack of certification against dust and water resistance (IP rating), Lau said that "the number of users that are taking their phone to go swimming are few and far between," so the cost to get the OnePlus 6T IP certified seemed "unreasonable." Lau, though, assured that the 6T will be more water resistant than previous OnePlus phones.

In a teardown video of the OnePlus 6, JerryRigEverything's Zack Nelson found the OnePlus 6 to have as much protection as other IP67 certified smartphones. Lau's claim of the 6T being more water resistant than its predecessors hints that the OnePlus 6T could have gotten an IP rating, but OnePlus didn't go for it to save costs.
