HMD Global: App Actions & Digital Wellbeing won't be coming to Nokia 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8 running Android Pie
HMD Global started rolling out Android 9 to the Nokia 8 earlier today. It was however found that the update didn't comprise of basic Pie features such as Adaptive Battery, App Actions and Digital Wellbeing. As expected, this angered users who then expressed their criticism on Reddit, Twitter and Nokia's own community forums. HMD Global has now issued a statement to Nokiapoweruser to clear the air.
HMD Global says that App Actions and Digital Wellbeing are features exclusive to the Android One platform and Pixel smartphones. Since the Nokia 8 is not an Android One phone, it won't be getting the two features. There is hope though, as HMD is working with Google to make the features available on non-Android One phones.
In addition to the Nokia 8, there are other phones from HMD Global that are assured of an update to Pie but are not a part of the Android One program. These include the Nokia 2, the Nokia 3, the Nokia 5, the Nokia 6 and the Nokia 7. App Actions and Digital Wellbeing won't be coming to these phones too.
As for Adaptive Battery, the statement says that the feature needs more refinement. HMD Global claims that it needs a few weeks of testing to make the feature run well on the Nokia 8. The company plans to add the functionality to the Nokia 8 through a software update in January/February.
