Android Enhances Split-Screen Mode Ahead of Pixel 9 Pro Fold Launch

Android has quietly updated its split-screen mode to support left-right multitasking in portrait mode, a feature that will be particularly useful for the upcoming Pixel 9 Pro Fold.

The update, which was introduced in Android 14 QPR2, allows users to put apps in a left-right split even when their device is in portrait mode. This is a significant improvement, as most Android smartphones are not conducive to multitasking due to their small screens. However, with the rise of foldable phones, there is a growing need for more flexible multitasking options.

The new feature is particularly relevant for devices like the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, which is expected to have a nearly square aspect ratio. This means that users will be able to take advantage of the device's larger screen real estate to multitask more effectively.

Code discovered in the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) suggests that the feature is being tested on the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, and also reveals the device's screen resolution. According to the code, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold's display resolution will be 2,076 x 2,152 in its default portrait orientation.

The update is not the only recent improvement to Android's split-screen mode. In Android 15, the ability to save split-screen app pairs to the home screen was added, and work is ongoing to revamp Android's desktop mode, which will greatly benefit larger screen devices like book-style foldables and tablets.

The Pixel 9 Pro Fold is expected to be announced at the upcoming Made by Google 2024 hardware event on August 13, and it will be interesting to see if Google has any other multitasking improvements up its sleeve.
