Fintech Company Wise Discloses That Some of Its Customers Were Affected by Evolve Bank Data Breach

Wise, a money transfer and fintech company, has announced that some of its customers' personal data may have been compromised in the recent data breach at Evolve Bank and Trust. This development highlights the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the fallout from the Evolve data breach on third-party companies and their customers.

According to a statement published on Wise's official website, the company worked with Evolve from 2020 until 2023 to provide USD account details. As a result, some Wise customers' personal information may have been involved in the breach.

The company shared U.S. customers' personal data with Evolve, including names, addresses, dates of birth, contact details, and Social Security numbers or Employer Identification Numbers. For non-U.S. customers, Wise also shared another identity document number.

Although the exact number of affected Wise customers is still unclear, the company is actively investigating the incident. Wise has promised to directly notify all customers who may have been affected by the breach.

The Evolve data breach, which was caused by a ransomware attack by the LockBit cybercrime gang, resulted in the unauthorized access and download of customer information from the company's databases and file shares. Evolve has assured that there is no evidence that the criminals accessed any customer funds, but the breach did involve the theft of customer information.

Several other companies, including Affirm, EarnIn, Marqeta, Melio, and Mercury, have also acknowledged that they are investigating the impact of the Evolve breach on their customers. The full extent of the breach and its effects on third-party companies and their customers remain unclear.
